The Golf Lab in Palo Alto, California has been relying on its Achiever launch monitor to perform club fittings for over six years. Recently, head club fitter Leith Anderson discussed an innovative new use of the Achiever that has allowed him to optimize golf clubs with counterweights from Balance-Certified and Tour Lock Golf.
The obvious use of the Achiever to compare the performance of golf clubs is to focus on ball speed. Since most players are looking for more distance, ball speed is paramount.
After we find the club that yields the best performance, we turn our attention to optimizing the balance of that club. When fitting clubs for counterweights, we always find that one weight produces higher ball speed than all others. Sometimes, the differences in the weight tested can be very small – frequently just four grams makes a difference of 2-3 MPH in ball speed. The Achiever is reliable to detect very small increases in ball speed.
But the most sophisticated use of the Achiever is to interpret indicators of performance improvement that go well beyond the measurement of ball speed. The Achiever provides variance calculations with the most detailed reports. The variance calculations reveal statistics that go beyond ball speed. When a club is optimized, we find that a player’s swing path, face angle at impact, center face contact and launch angle become more consistent. The detailed report printout makes it easy for customers to understand exactly how, and how much, counterbalancing their clubs helps them become more consistent ball-strikers.
The Achiever is our most effective sales tool – which is saying something for a shop that has three other launch monitors. - Leith Anderson, Owner of The Golf Lab
